Matt O'Connor

With a young family to consider, 34-year-old Matt and his partner were on the look-out for a home offering more space than their small barn conversion in South Devon. Reluctant at first, Matt was against the idea of moving to a new-build, but after hearing positive rumours about Sherford, the family of four decided to pay the new community a visit. “My first impressions of Sherford were that it stood out to me. The houses were beautiful. I’d never seen anything like it. The homes were completely different to what you’d normally see in a new build” said Matt.

“I thought moving from our ‘chocolate box’ house meant we would have to sacrifice character for space, but at Sherford we have it all. I absolutely love the Willow - the brickwork, the height of the ceilings, the sash windows - and every room has so much space, and the kids are definitely happy that we’ve turned one of the five bedrooms into a playroom for them!”

Using the Government- backed Help to Buy scheme, Matt and his family were able to buy the five-bedroom Willow townhouse with just a 5% deposit. “I never thought it would be possible for us to afford a home to that specification, and as a second-time buyer, I didn’t think we would qualify for the Help to Buy scheme. I think this is something a lot of people aren’t aware of.”

As a site manager for a housing development, Matt was aware of the potential snagging issues to look out for with new builds. “I’m used to looking for the tell-tale signs of a rushed development, but at Sherford I couldn’t fault it. Everything was finished to such a high standard. I could tell a lot of thought and care had gone into its construction.”

Situated within easy access to both Plymstock and Plympton, Sherford makes commuting easy for both Matt and his wife, and the children are also benefitting from living within the community. “The kids love living here, everyone is really friendly and they have lots of friends that live at the town too, so we feel confident letting the children go out to play. It feels very safe here.”

Matt added, “We have a beautiful garden now where we can host barbeques in the summer. It’s great to live within a community where you receive invites through your door to events, while also having the privacy and tranquillity of being in a spacious and quiet home.”

When asked whether this was Matt’s ‘forever home’ for him and his family, Matt answered, “Definitely! We’ve had a wonderful opportunity to relocate here, and we are so excited for the future as Sherford continues to grow and develop. We are really happy here, and we don’t plan on leaving -ever!”
